A Guide to Getting Married in Cape May, New Jersey

filed under

There’s truly something special about getting married in Cape May. Between the historic charm, oceanfront backdrops, and sunsets that light up the sky in pastel hues, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose this special little seaside town for their wedding day. Whether you’re local or planning a destination celebration, there are a few things worth knowing before you say “I do” in this coastal gem of a town.

As a wedding photographer who spends most weekends capturing love stories here, I’ve gathered a few inside tips to help make your Cape May wedding planning as seamless (and enjoyable) as possible.

The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Cape May

Cape May is beautiful year-round, but each season brings its own personality. Late spring through early fall is the most popular time for weddings. This looks like golden sunsets, ocean breezes, and lush hydrangeas in bloom. If you’re hoping for fewer crowds, consider a May or October wedding. You’ll still get those gorgeous beach views and mild temperatures, but with a little more privacy and availability.

TIP: One thing to keep in mind is hurricane season is June 1st to November 30th, and we sometimes get nor’easters in the fall that bring a lot of wind and rain. If you’re getting married in Cape May (or any coastal town), make sure your venue has a backup rain spot for your ceremony and/or reception that you also love.

Average Wedding Costs in Cape May

Like most coastal destinations, wedding pricing here can vary quiet a bit depending on the venue and guest count. On average, couples getting married in Cape May spend between $35,000-$55,000 for their celebration, although, intimate gatherings and elopement can absolutely be done beautifully for less.

Venues like Congress Hall, The Southern Mansion, Beach Plum Farm, and Cape May Winery each offer their own distinct vibe – from timeless and elegant, to romantic and relaxed, to rustic and effortless. And of course, beachfront ceremonies (followed by portraits in that golden Cape May light) are always a favorite. TIP: If having a ceremony on the beach, just make sure to get a permit from city hall!

A Few Local Tips for the Perfect Cape May Wedding

  • PLAN FOR PARKING: Cape May is walkable, but parking can be tricky during peak summer weekends. If your venue is downtown or near the beach, consider having guest shuttles or valet service. Parking along Beach Ave, The Washington Street Mall, and some other side streets are metered using the Park Mobile app.
  • EMBRACE THE LOCAL CHARM: From horse-drawn carriages to pastel-painted bed and breakfasts, there’s so much character here. Incorporating small Cape May details – like saltwater taffy flavors, or a local signature cocktail like infusing beach plum or another local ingredient – adds a thoughtful touch.
  • GOLDEN HOUR IS EVERYTHING: The light in Cape May is truly unmatched. Most times at golden hour, it doesn’t even feel like you’re in New Jersey. Whether your portraits are on the beach, at a vineyard, or by the lighthouse, schedule some time around sunset for dreamy, glowing bride and groom photos.
  • BOOK YOUR ACCOMMODATIONS EARLY: Between weddings and summer tourists, Cape May books up quickly. Encourage your guests to reserve rooms well in advance – especially if your wedding falls between June and September. Quaint local spots like The Virginia Hotel, Congress Hall, or The Lokal are guest favorites. Airbnb is also a great option, especially for larger groups who are staying together.
  • PREPARE FOR BREEZE: The ocean breeze is part of Cape May’s charm, but it’s worth keeping in mind for your wedding day. I recommend opting for a secured hairstyle, consider lightweight fabrics that move beautifully in the wind, and plan decor that can withstand a little coastal gust.
  • ENCOURAGE GUESTS TO EXPLORE: Your guests are definitely going to fall in love with Cape May, too. Share a mini “local guide” on your wedding website and include favorite restaurants like The Washington Inn, the Rusty Nail, or Beach Plum Farm. Activities like a bike ride down Beach Avenue, or a visit to the lighthouse and Cape May Point State Park, or where to catch the best sunset views (psst – mine is Lehigh Ave in Cape May Point).
