Cape May, NJ, is the ultimate destination for couples seeking a romantic vacation filled with charm, relaxation, and breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a surprise proposal, or simply craving some quality time together, Cape May offers an abundance of activities, incredible dining, and the perfect spots for creating unforgettable memories. Here’s your curated guide to a Cape May vacation, complete with scenic locations ideal for photography, cozy accommodations, and my favorite dining recommendations.
To set the tone for your romantic weekend, check into one of Cape May’s beachfront hotels. Options like Congress Hall, Lokal Hotel or ICONA Cape May provide luxurious comfort with stunning ocean views. Waking up to the sound of waves sets the stage for a memorable weekend.
Tip: Many hotels offer private balconies, which are perfect for sharing a glass of wine or a cocktail while watching the sunset.
Start your weekend with a walk along the iconic Cape May Promenade. The gentle ocean breeze and the sound of the waves create the perfect backdrop for connecting with your partner.
For dinner, reserve a table at The Washington Inn, an upscale restaurant known for its romantic ambiance and amazing cuisine. Their wine list is impressive, and the crab cakes are a must-try!
Photographer’s Insight: Sunset is the ideal time to book a portrait session and capture candid, effortless, intimate moments. The soft light at sunset combined the ocean, large beach, and Victorian architecture offers the best backdrop for photos. Contact me here for more info on portrait sessions!
Wake up early to watch the sunrise on Cape May Beach – my favorite spot is Poverty Beach at the very north tip of Cape May. It’s the best way to start the day, and the morning light is absolutely magical. Afterward, grab coffee and a pastry at Out There Coffee or Golden Stop for a cozy, local vibe.
Spend your morning exploring Cape May Point State Park. Climb the Cape May Lighthouse for panoramic views of the shoreline, and then enjoy a peaceful walk through the park’s nature trails. Pack a blanket for an impromptu picnic on Sunset Beach, where you can search for Cape May diamonds—tiny, polished quartz stones unique to this area.
A trip to Cape May wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Willow Creek Winery. Sip on a glass of rosé in their vineyard garden, and soak in the relaxed, romantic atmosphere. If you prefer beer, Cape May Brewing Co. is a great alternative with plenty of local brews to try. Cape May Brewing Co. is off the island and about a 15 minute drive from Cape May, but their beer is definitely worth it.
For dinner, enjoy the most delicious tacos and margs at Taco Caballito – it’s casual dining with beachfront views. Afterwards, you can take a walk up Decatur St. to the Washington Street Mall for boutique shopping and an ice cream sandwich dessert at Peace Pie.
Photographer’s Insight: Cape May Point’s beach is a stunning location for couple’s portraits and one of my go-to’s. Golden hour creates a dreamy, warm glow for your photos.
Start your final day with brunch at The Mad Batter, located on Jackson St. They’re known for their bloody mary and fluffy stack of pancakes. You really can’t go wrong with anything you order here! They do not take reservations – however, anytime I’ve gone as a party of two, the wait is minimal to none.
Spend some time wandering through Beach Plum Farm’s gardens and trails, see their animals (chickens, pigs, ducks), and check out their cute little market with fresh produce, gifts, and more.
Wrap-Up with a Sunset Cruise
Before heading home, book a sunset cruise to end your weekend on a high note. Whether you spot dolphins or simply take in the views, it’s a romantic and peaceful way to close out your time in Cape May.
